RSS readers for mobiles
I have failed to be impressed with most of the Java-app RSS readers that I’ve seen available for free download. I use RSS on my mobile a lot. It’s a great way to keep up with all the info I need when I’m away from my computer.
Bloglines. For ages I have been using Bloglines mobile. I tried Google Reader and it was so graphic intensive and ran so much junk in the background that I could never get the pages to load. So even on my computer I prefer Bloglines. I use the “classic” version rather than the Beta and I will be perfectly happy with it until they take it away from me. Just access it from your mobile browser.
AvantGo works on your mobile phone. And it has the option of subscribing to RSS feeds by creating channels based on feeds. There is even downloadable software available for a very few handsets which I assume means you can archive the feeds on your mobile and read them offline.
Opera Mini browser: I didn’t realize this until I started writing this article, but it occurred to me that Opera Mini might handle RSS automatically. And when I tried it, it did. Opera Mini displays text and photos from a website perfectly formatted for the mobile screen. Dandy!
Each of these three options has its advantages. For the person just getting into mobile computing I would definitely recommend the Opera Mini browser. It is far, far superior to the stock browser that is currently on your Nokia mobile. If a person wanted to keep track of several feeds and only display the most recent ones then I think Bloglines mobile would be the way to go. Avant Go… I’m not sure what I would use it for but someone else might be able to put in a good word for it.
If you know of a Java application for cell phones that allows you to track RSS feeds, let me know in the comments of this post.
Happy feeding!

After playing with Opera Mini more I realized that it handles RSS beautifully. Any page with a feed is shown with a Subscribe to this feed option at the top. Then all your feeds are managed from the Start page. Certainly a painless way to use RSS without relying on a dedicated service like Bloglines.
Have you tried the mobile google reader? (http://www.google.com/reader/m/view)? I like this on my phone because it keeps all my RSS reading updated across all my browsers (desktop too) And it is not graphic intense.
