It’s not always who you think
Article: Girls In US And UK Command Remarkable Web Usage Numbers by Paul Glazowski
If I had to guess whether boys or girls were more likely to blog I’d probably vote for boys. But Paul reports that young women are far more likely to be bloggers than young men.
According to a recent Pew Internet Project targeted at teens, 35% of American girls have registered blogs, and 32% have multifaceted websites. (For boys, it is 20% and 22%, respectively.)
One thing that’s notable about this is that the dominance of girls in the blogospher is relatively recent and can be tied to the improvement of social networking tools.
An equivalent situation is with the use of SMS. While you might think that Africa is behind in the use of technology, Africans are far more likely to use SMS than Americans or Europeans. And I’m also placing my bets on widespread adoption of the mobile Internet which will far outstrip the usage of the Internet on a computer much in the same way that mobile phones surpass fixed line phones in Africa.
