Two blog or not two blog

My dear Mother always says nothing succeeds like excess. Is it possible to have too many blogs? lingalinga is my latest blog and it seems I’ve lost count of how many blogs I actually have at the moment…

In addition to these, I have an unending list of abandoned projects like 5 Slices of Baloney, Koostick, and the Centre for Smenitalogical Studies. I even created a blog named David Ker thinking that it would help point people to my various projects (turns out search engines don’t work that way. But that’s a story for another time.).

So that looks like an even ten blogs. Of those, the cute kid blog and the Nyungwe blog are only updated once a month or so. The dictionary blog is heading for extinction since the official Lexique Pro website now lists dictionaries on the web. That means there are really only four blogs that I keep up on a regular basis: Lingamish, lingalinga, Afri-Kers, and Nyungwe Bible Translation. And I think that is a pretty good number. With those four blogs I can hit every audience I’m targeting because in a lot of cases these audiences don’t overlap.

In a post titled On (not) being a two blog mind, Tim at Sans Blogue wonders if I’m quite sane starting another blog and a commenter mentions that someone that can’t write enough for one blog shouldn’t have two. But my problem is not in having enough ideas. My problem is focusing on the subject at hand. Now, let’s see. What were we talking about?

Finally, Tim levels a charge at me of using my various blogs to inflate my ranking by having them link to each other. To that charge I can only reply by saying it’s a great idea and one of the cornerstones of my modest technorati ranking.

The final thing to mention (and I mean it this time) is that I don’t write for you. This is a big exercise in creative writing that benefits me personally and trying to build an audience at Lingamish has forced me to write better and more often than if I was storing things away in dusty notebooks which is what I did for the couple of decades before I started my blog in December of 2005. (Sorry about the run-on sentence).

Is two blogs too many for you?

So this is how you overtook me? I’m not sure whether to cry “foul” or to copy you!
